One unit is one unit each week spent in total. Most locks are changed three times a week and are worth three units.
One unit = one semester
A typical college consists of 3 units, so basically your college allows most students to take 4 SIMs (12 units) per semester in 3 semesters. As usual, colleges do not want students to be overwhelmed by work.
